Deconstructing the creative misbelief: This is a solo career.

If creation was a solo act there wouldn’t be orchestras, or comic books, or restaurants. Some things are impossible to do on our own, and living a creative existence is one of them.

Creation thrives on connection—connection of ideas, connection of mediums, connection of your work to the person who needs it. The “all by myself” mentality holds firm because it feeds the illusion you have control over how your creative work will unfold.

By now though, experience has taught you creative work has a mind of its own. Trying to control it is futile and absolutely maddening.

Don’t waste time trying to figure out how your version of I have to do this all by myself got there. Just remember when you feel like no one understands what you’re going through or help isn’t available, you have reverted to survival instincts. Survival roots in isolation; creation thrives on connection.

When you accept connection as a base component of creative energy, you can harness the nature of that energy. Intentionally building a support system now makes your life a whole lot easier, opportunities come faster, and it’s exponentially more fun.

Feeling resistance to connecting with others? Act to break the I’m in this alone misbelief by asking:

  • Do I really have to do this all alone?
  • Is this an attempt to control an uncontrollable energy?
  • Am I subconsciously choosing to make my job harder than it needs to be?
  • Am I just finding an excuse to justify to others why I’m not accomplishing what I know I’m intended to?

Consider these ALIGNED BELIEFS as a replacement:

“This is a collaborative career.”
“I get to create with my friends and have fun in the process.”
“I have the support of people who see my worth and champion my work.”
